He was shot by his own father, who disapproved of his choice of bride. The groom, Tomáš, is the son of the old kulak Záruba, who during the occupation denounced his neighbor Libor, who subsequently ended up in a concentration camp. However, Libor survived, and young Tomáš Záruba falls in love with his daughter Jana and marries her despite his father's protests.
